YouView, a new subscription-free internet-connected TV service for the UK, today confirmed that it will have a product in trial by the end of this year, with a full consumer launch planned in early 2012.
YouView will seamlessly bring digital TV combined with the last 7 days’ catch-up TV, on demand services and interactive applications straight to the television set – subscription free.
YouView is a brand new service that will give viewers with a broadband connection integrated digital TV with 7 days’ catch-up TV, on demand and other interactive content – subscription free.
Our vision is to deliver a new TV experience that is open to everyone – content providers, device manufacturers and application developers. To make this possible, YouView is enabling an open ecosystem for all types of organisations to engage with.
You’ll find that our way of doing things is completely different, in more ways than one.
Firstly, YouView is not tethered to any single internet service provider (ISP). Anyone that buys a YouView device will be able to take it home and plug it into their choice of broadband connection and it will work.
Our unique approach also lowers the barriers to entry for all types of content providers to reach the TV screen. YouView is enabling content providers to share their content across all YouView devices. Our central search and listings engine will be available to all content providers – giving them the flexibility to support their own business model (free, pay or advertising funded), and control their own relationship with viewers.
Finally, YouView will stimulate an open market for devices giving viewers the widest possible choice at competitive prices. We’re doing this by making the YouView Core Technical Specification for launch widely available to industry and supporting device manufacturers through our device partner programme.
Consumers will be free to choose whether they get a device from a retailer or as part of a broadband package from an ISP. YouView will be supporting and promoting both a horizontal and vertical market for Connected TV devices in the UK that device manufacturers can take advantage of.
YouView will support this ecosystem by:
Creating a consistent user interface, essentially a central search listing system and navigational environment that enables viewers to simply find the programmes they love
Providing a highly flexible information (metadata) aggregation service that ensures that the journey between linear TV and on-demand content is as seamless as possible for viewers
Operating a fair, reasonable and non discriminatory listings policy
Giving open access to the final core interoperability specifications for launch that will stimulate the inclusion of new partners in the ecosystem
Contributing to common standards for Connected TV through our participation in the Digital Television Group’s Connected TV work and other industry standardisation activity
Licensing and promoting a YouView trademark that promotes a quality viewing experience
Enabling a range of content and service business models
To fully support you being part of the YouView ecosystem, we plan to update our industry zone with guidelines and technical information that you’ll need as a content provider, device manufacturer or developer.
